A “Virtual Board” from Business Phoenix

SMEs tend to be run by highly competent and energetic people. They come from a self-reliant breed and, at least in good times, are inclined to be resistant to too much external advice. But, when the conditions get as tough as they are now, most business leaders know full well the value of having independent advisors to help sanity check their decision making.

We set up Business Phoenix for one simple reason. To support British SMEs and help them to thrive in the future. We did it because, having been part of business failures, and some successes too, we know how hard it is for smaller companies to get the help they need. In these mad times of pandemic, the need for such support has never been greater.

Big companies tend to get help for short periods by employing external consultants. For the longer term they make careful selections of non-executive board members – posts that are becoming increasingly important in the way large organisations govern themselves.

SMEs, of course, may struggle to resource either consultants or NEDs. Resources are tight and such expenditure is hard to justify.

Business Phoenix can provide what we think of as a “virtual board” for use by our SME clients. Many of our people are already serving in various roles as NEDs and they understand the value the role can have. They also come from a broad range of backgrounds so we can find the expertise needed to tease out complex specialist issues. We don’t expect a permanent place on your Board, but we can provide the skill set you are looking for.

If you are an SME and you would like some help then don’t hesitate to approach us. As you will see, the first 4 hours is pro bono and, when that is done, we will work with you to see how we can go on supporting you into the future.
